Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has appealed to the Qatar Education Foundation to support the establishment of an Islamic Medical School in Ghana’s Northern Region.

Speaking during a diplomatic engagement, Mr. Iddrisu explained that the proposed institution would also function as a teaching hospital for the University for Development Studies (UDS). The initiative, he noted, is part of the Ministry’s broader goal to increase access to medical education and improve healthcare services across northern Ghana.
“We are seeking concessionary financing support for this project so that the ummah in that area can benefit,” he said.
The Minister also emphasized Ghana’s interest in strengthening institutional cooperation with Qatar’s Ministry of Education to facilitate knowledge exchange, best practices, and educational investment.
He announced that the Islamic curriculum for basic schools in Ghana will undergo a review—starting from kindergarten—to promote Arabic language education at the foundational level.
Mr. Iddrisu further confirmed Ghana’s participation in the upcoming Global Education Conference in Geneva, scheduled for September 2025, where the country will showcase its educational achievements and development priorities.
In response, Ambassador Al-Mesallam expressed strong interest in the proposal and reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to exploring collaborative initiatives to support Ghana’s education sector.
The meeting forms part of continued diplomatic efforts to build strategic education partnerships between Ghana and its global allies.
