Farmers are calling on policymakers to enhance access to funding for Ghanaian farmers and agribusinesses to help scale operations and improve productivity. Sandra Snowden, Co-Founder of Hendy Farms, highlighted the persistent challenges facing the agricultural sector, emphasizing that limited access to capital remains a major obstacle to growth.
While acknowledging some progress, Snowden stressed that more efforts are needed to make financing both accessible and affordable for farmers and agri-entrepreneurs. She underscored the importance of financial inclusion within the sector and urged the government to accelerate the launch of the Women’s Development Bank and introduce support systems tailored to agriculture’s specific needs.
“There needs to be greater access to funding and lower collateral requirements. Some banks now have agriculture-focused desks, which is encouraging and helps reduce the perception of agribusiness as high-risk,” Snowden stated. “We’re optimistic about the Women’s Development Bank, which is expected to launch soon. We hope it becomes more accessible to small-scale processors and women farmers this year.”
