Barimah Owusu Frimpong, the Adonteng Mmratohene of Akyem Kukurantumi, has confirmed that the suspect whose death sparked violent protests in the town was severely beaten and dragged before being taken to the hospital.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, he explained that the deceased, Bright, popularly known as D-ball, allegedly stabbed a community police assistant during his arrest. Though he was eventually subdued, Barimah Frimpong criticized the manner in which the arrest was handled, describing it as excessive and inhumane.

“After being overpowered, he was beaten mercilessly,” the chief stated. “He was weak, and they dragged him along the ground. Even at the hospital, he was still in handcuffs.”

He said the arrest was led by a station officer identified only as Kumador, along with two community police assistants.

Barimah Frimpong expressed sorrow over the incident, describing it as unprecedented in Kukurantumi. “I’ve never witnessed such brutality here. Perhaps it was due to an adrenaline rush,” he added.

He urged the youth to remain calm and allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation, stressing the importance of avoiding further violence.

“We must allow the law to take its course. Vigilante justice could endanger innocent lives,” he cautioned.

The chief assured the public that traditional leaders would collaborate with security forces to restore calm and prevent further disturbances.

In the meantime, the Kukurantumi Police Station has been closed, and personnel withdrawn following the attack on the facility.
