Atiwa East MCE Sentenced to Jail for Illegal Mining

The Koforidua High Court 2 has sentenced the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Atiwa East, Ernest Ntim, to eight days in jail for his role in illegal mining on protected land in the Eastern Region.

The court found Ntim and members of his team guilty of destroying farmlands, polluting the Koben River, and contaminating a vital water source relied upon by several local communities.

The ruling, delivered on Monday, December 15, followed multiple adjournments. The court emphasized that the illegal mining activities caused significant environmental damage and posed a serious threat to local livelihoods.

Ntim was also cited for contempt of court after allegedly continuing galamsey operations despite an existing injunction before the court.

The judgment highlights the judiciary’s firm stance against illegal mining and environmental degradation, particularly when public officials are involved.
