Albert Kwabena Dwumfour Re-Elected as GJA President for a Second Term

- Zadok Kwame Gyesi wins Public Affairs; Bertha Badu Agyei becomes Treasurer
Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has been re-elected as President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), securing 445 votes to defeat his only challenger, media trainer Charles Yao Mawusi, who garnered 245 votes. Dwumfour will now serve another three-year term.
In the race for Vice-President, Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) emerged victorious with 414 votes, ahead of Mary Mensah of the Daily Graphic, who polled 272 votes.
Dominic Hlordzi, the outgoing Organising Secretary, was elected General Secretary with 443 votes, defeating Multimedia Group’s Akwasi Agyeman, who received 247 votes.
In a closely contested race for Organising Secretary, Graphic Business Acting Editor Suleiman Mustapha won with 365 votes, beating former Eastern Regional Chairman Maxwell Kudekor of the Multimedia Group, who polled 321 votes.
Zadok Kwame Gyesi, a former staff member of Graphic Online, was elected Public Affairs Director with 431 votes, defeating GNA’s Caesar Abagali (253 votes). Meanwhile, Bertha Badu Agyei of GNA won the Treasurer position with 401 votes, surpassing GBC’s Theodora Yakunu (287 votes).
The election was keenly contested, with candidates traveling across the country to campaign over the past month. Dwumfour, who first served as Organising Secretary before becoming President, now enters his second term at the helm of the GJA.
Regional Executive Results
Across the regions, 49 candidates contested for leadership positions including Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. Competitive races were held in the Ashanti, Volta, Central, Upper East, Upper West, and Eastern regions, while 31 candidates ran unopposed.
In the Central Region, GBC’s Kingsley Nana Buadu was elected Chairman. Kofi Adu Domfeh, Senior News Editor at Multimedia in Kumasi, won the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship.

- Michael Dewornu (Tema)
- Regina Benneh Siaw (Bono Region)
- Frederick Antwi (Bono East)
- Kwabena Ntow (Oti Region)
- Yakubu Abdul-Majeed (Northern Region)
- Mohammed Fugu (North East Region)

A Call for Unity and Progress
In his victory speech, President Dwumfour described his re-election as a vote for continuity and progress. He pledged to build on the achievements of his first term while intensifying efforts to improve media freedom and working conditions.
“We will continue to fight for better conditions of service, enhance press freedom, and tackle impunity against journalists,” he said.
Dwumfour emphasized the media’s role in holding government accountable, amplifying the voices of the vulnerable, and providing balanced and accurate information to the public.
He called for collaboration with all stakeholders—including government, civil society, academia, and the private sector—stressing that a strong and independent media is essential to national development.
