Ahafo Minister, DCE Urge Dialogue with Newmont

The Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, and the District Chief Executive for Asutifi North, Hafiz Dauda, are calling on residents near Newmont’s operational sites to choose dialogue over protests when addressing issues with the mining company.

Their appeal came during a working visit to the Ahafo South Mine, where they stressed the importance of maintaining peaceful and constructive communication between Newmont and local communities.

Speaking to Adom News, both officials acknowledged that some of Newmont’s actions may fall short of community expectations, but emphasized that dialogue remains the most effective and sustainable way to resolve disputes.

They warned that protests often lead to violence and property damage, which negatively affect both the company and the communities involved.

Madam Gardiner and Mr. Dauda also disclosed that Newmont had expressed concern over illegal mining and speculative structures being built within its concession area. They assured the public that measures would be taken to address these challenges.

Meanwhile, Newmont Africa’s Director of Social Performance, Joseph Danso, described the visit as constructive, saying it allowed the company to raise key issues—particularly illegal encroachments and unauthorized developments that hinder their operations.

He noted that both the Regional Minister and the DCE have committed to supporting efforts to address these issues, which he believes will enhance Newmont’s ability to deliver on its social and community obligations.
