A strong windstorm in Tamale leaves over 1,000 female NOBISCO students homeless

A windstorm on Wednesday night has left over 1,000 female students at the Northern School of Business Senior High School (NOBISCO) in Tamale without a dormitory.

The storm damaged the roof of the girls’ dormitory, forcing the school to move the boys into other hostels to temporarily house the girls. This has worsened the already cramped living conditions at the school. Headmaster Hassan Issah Dokurugu described the situation as serious, noting that the dorms are so overcrowded that “they are literally lying on each other.” He also pointed out that the high temperatures in the area will make the situation worse.

“The rooms are overcrowded. Every small space in the room and on the veranda is used,” Dokurugu said, calling for urgent help to resolve the issue. Student Mohammed Adisa Mantinso told JoyNews that the storm started around 4:30 pm. While the rain was light, strong winds blew off the roof, trapping students inside the building until the boys arrived to clear the debris. “We were trapped after the wind blew the roof off. It wasn’t until after the rain that the boys came and removed the roof, and we came out,” she explained.

The female students are now staying in one of the boys’ dormitories. Another student mentioned the extreme overcrowding, saying that dorms designed for 10 students are now housing up to 25. She called on the government to step in and provide assistance to solve the overcrowding and infrastructure problems.
