90% of Road Contractors Inactive – Roads Minister

- Delayed payments have forced many to suspend or abandon projects
- Gov’t aims to resolve funding gaps and resume stalled infrastructure work
- 90% of contractors holding sites but not working
Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has disclosed that over 90% of road contractors across Ghana are currently inactive, despite having officially taken possession of their project sites.
In an interview with Citi FM, Mr. Agbodza revealed that a recent nationwide inspection highlighted a significant mismatch between reported progress and the actual state of road works on the ground.
“More than 90% of contractors are not on site,” he said. “They legally possess the sites, but no work is ongoing.”
The Minister attributed the widespread inactivity largely to financial difficulties. According to him, although some contractors have completed portions of their projects and submitted interim payment certificates, delayed government payments have stalled further work.
“In many instances, to be fair, work was done and certificates were submitted. But without timely payments, contractors have either exhausted their funds and become inactive or abandoned the projects entirely,” he explained.
These remarks reinforce Mr. Agbodza’s earlier criticism of the previous administration, made during the Government Accountability Series held at Jubilee House on July 30, where he called for evidence-based evaluations of infrastructure claims.
He assured the public that the current administration is actively addressing the funding challenges and remains committed to reviving stalled projects to improve the nation’s road network.
