Global internet sensation popularly known as “Speed” received a warm and symbolic welcome during a traditional Akan naming ceremony held on Monday in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
Steeped in royal pageantry and cultural heritage, the event introduced the digital star to age-old customs, culminating in his conferment of the Akan name Barima Kofi Akuffo.
Organised by local chiefs and elders, the ceremony transformed the community grounds into a vibrant display of colourful regalia, pulsating drum rhythms, and joyous celebration. Residents and subjects turned out in large numbers, creating an atmosphere of warmth, pride, and hospitality.
Clad in specially prepared traditional attire, Speed fully embraced the experience. He danced energetically to the sounds of the fontomfrom drums, greeted elders respectfully, and exchanged smiles with cheering spectators, clearly touched by the overwhelming reception.
The ceremony reached its peak when he was formally presented to the King.
Within Akan culture, the name Barima Kofi Akuffo holds deep significance. “Barima” denotes a brave, strong, and noble man—often interpreted as a warrior or hero. “Kofi” signifies that he was born on a Friday, a day associated with peace and fertility, while “Akuffo” represents a respected family lineage. Together, the name reflects strength, resilience, and a meaningful bond with the community.
