Major crash at Ofankor barrier causes heavy traffic

A serious road accident early Tuesday morning, August 5, 2025, at the Ofankor barrier on the Accra-bound lane of the Accra–Achimota highway has caused severe traffic congestion, leaving many commuters stranded for hours.

The collision involved two cargo trucks traveling in opposite directions—one heading toward Accra from Pokuase, and the other moving toward Pokuase.

Eyewitnesses described the crash as intense, noting that the impact caused one of the trucks to break into two. Remarkably, one of the drivers emerged unscathed and was later seen attempting to retrieve diesel from the wreckage.

The situation deteriorated further when another driver trying to navigate around the scene got stuck, blocking a key access route and worsening the gridlock.

Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, initial reports point to the possibility of one driver either falling asleep or swerving to avoid a pothole.

Officers from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) responded swiftly to manage traffic, while efforts are ongoing to tow the damaged vehicles and restore normal flow on the busy highway.
