Chaos in Parliament over Kpandai seat ruling

Parliamentary proceedings erupted into chaos as the Majority and Minority clashed over the Speaker’s directive to continue the day’s business.

The disruption followed demands from Minority MPs to adjourn the House after Speaker Alban Bagbin deferred his ruling on the vacant Kpandai parliamentary seat.

Earlier, Minority MPs prevented Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from responding to calls for the withdrawal of a letter from the Clerk of Parliament declaring the Kpandai seat vacant. The letter, dated December 4, 2025, was sent to Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa following a High Court ruling ordering a rerun of the Kpandai election.

Dressed in black, Minority MPs chanted patriotic songs, banged tables, and jeered at Clerk of Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who attempted to restore order. Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh described the letter as “out of place” and “unfortunate,” arguing it contravened the rule of law and should be withdrawn.

The standoff intensified as Minority MPs repeatedly obstructed Mahama Ayariga whenever he tried to speak. Speaker Bagbin was compelled to temporarily suspend proceedings, urging MPs to respect parliamentary standing orders and noting that the matter would be resolved after consultations with House leadership.
