Alhaji Masawudu Slapped During By-Election Confrontation

A heated confrontation erupted at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area on Tuesday during the ongoing by-election, involving Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the security escort of Chief Sofo Azorka, Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Recounting the incident, Alhaji Masawudu told reporters that the clash occurred while he was being interviewed near the Akwatia Zongo area, where he had been assigned to observe the election proceedings.

“I was conducting an interview when Chief Azorka, out of ignorance, stormed in and launched an attack,” Masawudu alleged.

He further claimed that the confrontation unfolded in the full view of police officers stationed at the scene.

“He openly declared that he would ensure I get caned today—both myself and Hon. Afenyo-Markin,” Masawudu added.

Eyewitnesses reported that tensions escalated rapidly, with a member of Azorka’s team allegedly slapping Masawudu before police officers stepped in to de-escalate the situation. As of now, no arrests have been made.

The altercation adds to a series of incidents between supporters of the ruling NPP and opposition NDC as voting continues across 119 polling stations in the Akwatia Constituency.

Over 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in what is being described as a crucial and high-stakes by-election.
