Private legal practitioner and journalist, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has expressed deep concern over the persistent loss of public funds due to corruption and a lack of accountability.
Speaking at COMSSA FEST 2025 — an event hosted by the Communication and Media Studies Students’ Association at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) — Mr. Anyenini referenced the 2024 Auditor-General’s report, which revealed that Ghana lost GH¢18.41 billion due to what the report termed as “irregularities.”
He challenged the language used in the report, stating:
“The report says GH¢18.41 billion has been lost to irregularities. But let’s be clear — this money was stolen or misused. Let’s call it what it is: theft.”
Mr. Anyenini emphasized that in the last five years alone, nearly GH¢80 billion has been lost to corruption and mismanagement, underscoring the severe impact of weak systems and lack of accountability.
He also criticised the removal of former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, claiming he was ousted for aggressively pursuing corrupt officials and recovering large sums of public funds.
“He was removed because he was going after those stealing from the state,” he stated.
Calling for civic action, Mr. Anyenini urged citizens to demand transparency and insist that national resources be used to deliver essential services like education, healthcare, and justice.
“Citizens must raise their voices to ensure leaders uphold the constitution and deliver the real benefits of democracy,” he concluded.
