Calling All Young Ghanaians: Shape Your Nation’s Future!

- Forum emphasizes on young people's role in development
- The event brought together prominent figures
- Prof Seidu acknowledged the need for a cultural shift
A recent forum at the University of Ghana (UG) emphasized the crucial role young people play in Ghana’s democratic development.
Organized by the Africa Centre for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development (CDS Africa), the event brought together prominent figures to discuss the importance of active youth participation.
The message was clear: Ghana’s future hinges on the engagement of its young citizens.
Speakers like MP Lydia Seyram Alhassan highlighted the positive impact youth can have, from fostering innovation to strengthening leadership. She emphasized the need to invest in Ghana’s youth, recognizing them as a driving force for economic growth.
Professor Alidu Seidu challenged the notion that democratic participation is solely government-driven. He stressed that citizens, including the youth, can initiate action through petitions and other means.
Professor Seidu urged Ghanaians to take ownership of the democratic process, not waiting for government cues.
He also acknowledged the need for a cultural shift, encouraging a more open approach to youth participation.
However, the forum wasn’t without contrasting views. A student representative, Mr. Alor, voiced concerns about barriers hindering youth involvement, including institutional structures.
He encouraged his peers to stay focused, drawing inspiration from figures like Kofi Annan, and actively engage to be recognized.
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) offered a different perspective. Mrs. Lucile Hewlett Annan suggested that some young people might not be fully prepared or interested in actively participating in politics.
She emphasized that impactful participation can occur at various levels of society, not just through high leadership positions.
This diversity of opinions highlights the importance of ongoing dialogue.
Ghana’s youth have a vital role to play, and by working together, they can overcome challenges and ensure their voices are heard in shaping the nation’s future.
