The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Ghana cedi on July 19, 2025.

In a statement issued on May 13, the central bank highlighted that the cedi has served as Ghana’s sole legal tender since its introduction on July 19, 1965, replacing the Ghanaian Pound. It described the currency as a powerful symbol of the country’s economic independence and development journey.

“To meet the evolving needs of the Ghanaian economy, the cedi has undergone various transformations in both design and policy over the past six decades. Each change reflects Ghana’s resilience, innovation, and commitment to economic progress,” the statement said.

To mark this milestone, the BoG will host a series of national events and engagements from July to December 2025. These will include an official launch ceremony, public exhibitions, educational outreach, and stakeholder forums.

“The anniversary is a moment for Ghanaians to reflect on the cedi’s legacy, celebrate its role in national development, and reaffirm our shared duty to uphold the value and trust in our currency,” the statement noted.

The central bank also described the cedi as more than a medium of exchange—it is a symbol of national pride, heritage, and collective aspirations.

The BoG invited the public, institutions, and development partners to take part in the celebrations. Details of specific programmes and events will be announced in the coming months.

The statement concluded with the Bank’s renewed commitment to safeguarding the stability and integrity of the cedi as part of its broader efforts to ensure macroeconomic stability.
