The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed the appointment of Swedish coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, the national women’s football team.

Bjorkegren, 43, has signed a two-year contract, succeeding Nora Häuptle, who recently took over as head coach of Zambia’s Copper Queens following the expiration of her contract with the GFA.

At his unveiling, Bjorkegren expressed his dedication to improving the team and driving success. “The most important aspect of my job is to visit all the players, watch games, and help them improve,” he said.

He also highlighted the significance of consistent effort, noting, “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but the most important thing for me, the staff, and the players is to work hard every single day to ensure success sooner or later.”

Bjorkegren further spoke about the abundance of football talent in Ghana, which has given him confidence for both immediate and long-term progress. “I see so much talent in this country, so I am sure that, in the short term, we have the potential to be successful. In the long term, I can guarantee that we will be successful.”

The new coach’s first challenge will be a friendly match against Morocco on February 21, as part of the Black Queens’ preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to take place in July.

The Black Queens have been placed in Group C of the competition, where they will face South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.
