Zabzugu MP Backs Removal of Chief Justice, Says It Will Restore Judicial Credibility

Member of Parliament for Zabzugu, Alhassan Umar, has endorsed the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, stating that the move is a necessary step toward restoring public confidence in Ghana’s judiciary.

Justice Torkornoo was relieved of her duties by President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, September 1, 2025, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the decision followed recommendations from a committee established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition submitted by a citizen, Daniel Ofori.

The announcement, signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, noted that the President was constitutionally mandated to act on the committee’s findings. Her dismissal took immediate effect.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Thursday, September 4, Mr. Umar said the development would strengthen the judiciary and reinforce democratic principles.

“This move doesn’t weaken the judiciary—it restores its credibility. Many Ghanaians had lost trust in the system, and this is the beginning of a reset to rebuild that confidence,” he said.

He further emphasized the link between a credible judicial system and economic development.

“For any economy to attract investment and grow, a dependable regulatory environment is essential—and that starts with trust in the judiciary,” he added.
