State funeral scheduled for August 15

President John Dramani Mahama has declared that a state funeral will be held on Friday, August 15, at Black Star Square to honour the eight individuals who lost their lives in the tragic military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District, Ashanti Region.

The funeral service, which will be inter-denominational, is part of a week-long national mourning period to pay tribute to the deceased ministers, senior government officials, and military personnel.

The commemoration will begin with an “Evening of Reflections and Memorial” on Saturday, August 9, at 5:00 p.m. at the Forecourt of the State House.

As part of the mourning activities, books of condolence will be opened to the public from Sunday, August 10, to Thursday, August 14, at the following locations:

  • Ministry of Defence
  • Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters
  • National Democratic Congress (NDC) Headquarters
  • National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Head Office

The crash resulted in the deaths of five high-ranking state officials and three Air Force crew members. Among the victims were:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman
