Roads Minister Agbodza Decries State of Ghana’s Road Network

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of Ghana’s road infrastructure, describing it as “very deplorable.”
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 30, the Minister highlighted the urgent need for action, noting that despite promises of significant investment in the sector, much of the country’s road network remains in disrepair.
“Mr. Speaker, the condition of our roads is alarming. Many are riddled with potholes, have worn-out surfaces, and some bridges are on the verge of collapse,” Mr. Agbodza stated.
He blamed the situation on years of neglect, weak oversight of road contracts, and a poor maintenance culture. He added that the ministry has launched an audit of ongoing road projects to identify the most critical areas requiring immediate attention.
“Our citizens deserve better. Roads are not a luxury—they are essential to economic growth and national development,” he emphasized.
Mr. Agbodza assured Ghanaians of his ministry’s commitment to improving road conditions. He revealed that a national prioritization plan is underway, focusing on roads with the highest traffic volume, economic value, and fair regional distribution.
“We are committed to ensuring that every cedi spent in the sector delivers real and lasting impact,” he concluded.
