Rising family planning acceptance in Ahafo Region

Managers of the Ahafo Regional Health Directorate (RHD) report that the region’s family planning acceptor rate is increasing—an encouraging trend for public health.

At a stakeholder workshop on family planning held in Goaso, the Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr. Michael Twum Bredu, told ADOM NEWS that the directorate’s initiatives have motivated more residents to adopt family planning methods.

Dr. Twum Bredu explained that all health facilities in the region are equipped with trained officers who provide family planning services.

He further emphasized the impact of community outreach activities, where health workers, together with local opinion leaders, visit communities to educate people about the health benefits of family planning.

Despite the progress, Dr. Twum Bredu acknowledged ongoing challenges that require support from stakeholders.

He noted that misconceptions and misinformation still circulate—such as beliefs that family planning can block future pregnancies or cause excessive bleeding.

He added that certain religious groups continue to discourage their members from using family planning services, which affects overall uptake in the region.
