Trailblazing Ghanaian biomedical engineer, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, has been inducted as an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) in the United Kingdom, joining a distinguished group of the world’s leading figures in engineering and technology.

Her induction comes following her election during the Academy’s Annual General Meeting, which welcomed 74 new Fellows, including 60 Fellows, nine International Fellows, and five Honorary Fellows, representing fields such as energy, defence, materials science, and biomedical engineering.

Each honouree was recognised for pioneering innovations and significant contributions to advancing engineering and promoting public understanding of the profession.

Prof. Kaufmann, a pioneer in biomedical engineering, is the founder of the University of Ghana’s Biomedical Engineering Department. She serves as Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences and as an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, with a distinguished career in research, academic leadership, and STEM education across Ghana and Africa.

Beyond academia, she is widely known as the long-serving quiz mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), inspiring generations of young Ghanaians to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

On her induction, Prof. Kaufmann described the honour as a significant recognition of her work and contributions to engineering and education.
