The Governor of Mombasa County, Kenya, Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir, has embarked on a landmark visit to the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP) in Ghana, operated by the Jospong Group. The trip culminated in the signing of a new partnership agreement focused on replicating Ghana’s waste management solutions in Mombasa to address its growing sanitation challenges.
During his tour of KCARP, Governor Nassir explored the facility’s composting tunnels, plastic pellet production lines, and advanced waste-sorting systems. He commended the facility as a model that could be adapted to East Africa to promote both environmental sustainability and economic development.
The agreement, signed by Governor Nassir and Eugene Amo Asamoah, Business Development Manager of KCARP, establishes a strategic collaboration. Jospong Group will support Mombasa in building waste treatment infrastructure, setting up composting and sorting systems, and running public awareness campaigns. The project will also focus on job creation and community capacity-building.
Speaking at the facility, Governor Nassir emphasized the urgency of effective waste management and its broader economic impact:
“We are proud to be the first county to sign up. Working with Jospong, who have proven themselves, will help us turn waste into opportunity—not just reduce environmental harm but also generate jobs and leave a legacy for future generations.”
Eugene Amo Asamoah, representing Jospong Group, reiterated their commitment to delivering African-made solutions for African challenges:
“We’ve developed a tested blueprint for environmental sustainability. Now, Mombasa will benefit from a model built in Africa, for Africa. We believe Africans are best placed to solve their own problems.”
KCARP, founded by Zoomlion Ghana under the Jospong Group, is the largest integrated compost and recycling facility in Africa. It processes up to 2,400 tonnes of organic, plastic, paper, metal, and textile waste daily.
The partnership follows a June 2024 visit by a high-level Kenyan delegation, including members of the Council of Governors, who expressed confidence in adapting the Jospong model in Kenya.
