Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, cousin of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has expressed confidence that Mr. Ofori-Atta will return to Ghana despite ongoing legal proceedings in the United States.

In an interview with Accra-based GHOne TV, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart dismissed claims suggesting that the former minister has no intention of coming back.

“Why would he not return to Ghana? I believe Ken will come back, and I know he wants to come home,” he said.

When asked about his last conversation with Mr. Ofori-Atta, he replied, “Not so long ago.”

Mr. Otchere-Darko also addressed the former minister’s condition following his detention by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), noting that although he has not spoken to him since the incident, he remains confident about his well-being.

“He is doing well from what I have heard, even though I haven’t spoken to him since his detention. He is a strong man mentally, and I am sure that strength will carry him through,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s bond hearing for his bail application has been scheduled for February 19.

The case concerns his immigration status in the United States. He appeared before a U.S. immigration court in Virginia on January 20, 2026, after being detained earlier in the month by ICE.

U.S. authorities contend that his visitor visa had been revoked, leaving him without lawful status to remain in the country. Court documents show that the former finance minister is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Center while the legal proceedings continue.
