In a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and unlocking strategic opportunities in the energy sector, His Excellency Paskal A.B. Rois, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia to Ghana, paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister for Energy, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, at the Ministry of Energy in Accra.
Joining the meeting were key officials, including Mr. Solomon Adjetey, Chief Director at the Ministry, Mr. Isaac Nyarko Biney, Director of PPBME, and Ms. Vanessa Gifty Howusu, Secretary to the Honorary Consul.
H.E. Rois opened the meeting by congratulating the Minister and his team on their recent appointments, recognizing the vital role they play in shaping Ghana’s energy future.
He reaffirmed Indonesia’s longstanding diplomatic and economic partnership with Ghana—rooted in the early independence eras of both nations—and expressed a renewed commitment to expanding collaboration, especially within the energy sector.
Key Proposals and Areas of Cooperation:
- Renewable Energy Projects: Indonesia proposed establishing renewable energy plants in Ghana with capacities ranging from 500 to 2,000 MW to support and reinforce Ghana’s national energy grid.
- Oil Refinery Development: Plans were discussed for Indonesia to help establish a state-of-the-art oil refinery in Ghana to boost local oil processing capacity.
- Upstream Petroleum Exploration: Indonesia expressed continued interest in acquiring oil blocks in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector, signaling intent to deepen investment and cooperation.
- Water-Based Renewable Technology: A pioneering Indonesian technology that uses recycled water to generate electricity was introduced as a potential solution for sustainable power generation.
- Solar Energy Solutions: Offers were made to provide solar power plants and affordable solar street lighting across Ghana.
Additionally, H.E. Rois presented a number of capacity-building initiatives, such as the KNB Scholarship Program, designed to benefit the Ministry’s staff and citizens within the Minister’s jurisdiction.
In his response, Hon. Jinapor thanked the Honorary Consul for the visit and welcomed Indonesia’s strong interest in Ghana’s energy transformation. He expressed enthusiasm for the initiatives and requested a formal communiqué outlining the detailed proposals.
The Minister highlighted Ghana’s particular interest in:
- The KNB Scholarship for human capital development;
- Building renewable energy infrastructure;
- Implementing solar and thermal energy projects;
- Exploring water-based power generation systems;
- Establishing a local oil refinery;
- Facilitating upstream oil exploration partnerships.
This high-level interaction marks a renewed chapter in Indonesia–Ghana relations, paving the way for transformative cooperation in sustainable energy, investment, and mutual development.
