Ghana summons Israeli Embassy over airport incident

The Government of Ghana has announced that it will summon officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, after what it describes as the unjustified and inhumane treatment of Ghanaian travellers—including four Members of Parliament—at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, condemned the actions of Israeli authorities, revealing that seven Ghanaian citizens were detained upon their arrival in Tel Aviv on Sunday, December 7, without any valid reason.

Four of the detainees were MPs attending the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference. They were held for over five hours and released only after significant diplomatic intervention. The remaining three travellers were deported on the next available flight and have since returned to Ghana.

The Ministry described the incident as a deliberate act of discrimination against Ghanaian nationals, calling Israel’s conduct “extremely provocative, unacceptable, and inconsistent with the long-standing friendly ties between both nations.”

It also dismissed Israel’s claim that the episode stemmed from a lack of cooperation from Ghana’s Embassy in Tel Aviv during deportation formalities.

“Our mission has been fully responsive and compliant with international law, making Israel’s explanation untenable,” the statement stressed.

The government noted that it is considering appropriate reciprocal actions should Israel fail to adequately address Ghana’s concerns.
