Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Programmes and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana), has strongly criticised Majority MPs advocating for the repeal of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act, calling the move a serious breach of public trust.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, December 11, Dr. Asante said he was “shocked and very angry” that the Majority Caucus was promoting a proposal he believes goes against the wishes of Ghanaians.
He warned that any effort by the NDC Majority to pass the repeal bill would amount to a “major betrayal of trust,” arguing that it contradicts the party’s stated commitment to strengthening the country’s anti-corruption systems. He insisted that no section of the public has called for the OSP’s abolition, asking: “Ghanaians do not want this, so who are the MPs representing… themselves?”
Dr. Asante questioned whether the governing party was using its numbers in Parliament to push an agenda disconnected from public expectations.
He urged Ghanaians to hold lawmakers accountable by publicly expressing their opposition and engaging their MPs directly on social media, reminding Parliament that its authority comes from the people. “Ghanaians must let all the MPs know on their socials that they represent us and not themselves,” he emphasised.
He also criticised the speed at which the repeal process is being pursued, noting that the ongoing constitutional review already provides an appropriate platform for a broader national discussion on Ghana’s anti-corruption architecture. “What is the rush?” he asked, adding that decisions of this magnitude require national consensus.
Dr. Asante concluded that the widespread political support for dismantling the OSP—despite public disapproval—underscores the need for an independent, non-partisan prosecutor. He cautioned that at a time when “looting of public resources and impunity” threaten Ghana’s democratic foundations, eliminating the OSP would be dangerously irresponsible, warning of “a much bigger problem for the future of this country.”
