The Accra High Court has set July 23, 2025, as the start date for the trial of former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, and former CEO, Solomon Asamoah, in connection with the failed $2 million Accra Sky Train project.
The two are facing charges of causing financial loss to the state and the willful misuse of public funds. Both have pleaded not guilty and have been granted bail.
At a court sitting on Wednesday, July 9, Prof. Ameyaw Akumfi’s legal team officially withdrew an earlier application that sought to have the charges against him dismissed. That motion had previously prompted the Attorney General to request an expedited hearing, leading to a rescheduled date of July 3. However, proceedings did not occur on that day due to the absence of the defence team.
When the case resumed on July 9, Justice Comfort Tasiame struck out the application following its withdrawal by Prof. Akumfi’s lead counsel.
Meanwhile, Solomon Asamoah’s new lawyer, Victoria Barth, requested more time to review the case files, having recently taken over the case from former counsel.
Justice Tasiame granted the request and adjourned the matter to July 23 for the trial to begin.
The prosecution indicated it will call its first witness out of a total of eight when proceedings commence.
