Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has raised concerns about the behavior of some commercial drivers who charge inconsistent fares on identical routes—offering lower prices in the morning and increasing them in the evening.

He made the remarks during the launch of “Operation Disaster-Free Christmas” in Accra, an initiative aimed at enhancing emergency preparedness and ensuring public safety throughout the festive season.

Calling the practice unfair to commuters, the Mayor cautioned that any driver who disregards agreed-upon fares after their engagement will face strict legal action.

“Some of our drivers charge one fee in the morning and a different one in the evening, and it’s a major concern,” he said.

“I assure you that after this meeting, any driver who ignores the directives and charges more than the approved fare will be taken to the sanitation court. We will ensure they are remanded,” he warned.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly notes that its enforcement efforts, combined with wider safety measures being implemented ahead of the holidays, are intended to guarantee a safe, orderly, and secure Christmas for both residents and visitors.
