Teacher Trainees to Receive One Hot Meal Daily Starting June 16

Story Highlights
  • PRINCOF to provide only one hot meal per day for teacher trainees starting June 16, 2025
  • The decision is due to financial constraints and rising costs
  • Current funding cannot sustain three meals daily, PRINCOF says

The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has announced that, beginning Monday, June 16, 2025, teacher trainees across the country will receive only one hot meal per day due to financial limitations.

In an official statement, PRINCOF explained that while it recognizes the critical role of proper nutrition in supporting students’ well-being and academic performance, current funding levels make it unsustainable to continue providing three daily meals.

“We must balance the nutritional needs of our trainees with the financial realities facing our institutions,” the statement noted.

PRINCOF expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) for their ongoing cooperation and acknowledged government efforts to provide a GH¢400 monthly feeding grant per trainee.

However, it clarified that GH¢196 of this amount — equivalent to GH¢8.00 per day — is specifically allocated for meals, based on a prior agreement with TTAG.

Following wide consultations with all 47 public Colleges of Education, PRINCOF concluded that the current daily allowance is insufficient to continue offering three meals.

“This decision, though difficult, is necessary to protect vital services and ensure the long-term viability of our colleges,” the statement emphasized.

PRINCOF reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with TTAG, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and other partners to address the broader welfare challenges faced by teacher trainees.
