Busia Family Drags Bono Chiefs to Court Over Wenchi Stool

Story Highlights
  • The Busia family is challenging the installation of Mr. Abrefa Damoah as the Wenchihene
  • The Busia family claims that Mr. Damoah's installation contravenes the Chieftaincy Act
  • The family has filed a lawsuit against the Bono Regional House of Chiefs

The Sofoase Yefere Royal Family of Wenchi, to which the Busia family is affiliated, has initiated a judicial review at the High Court in Sunyani.

Filed on July 25, 2024, the application requests a Mandamus order to require the Judicial Committee of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs to form a panel to address a prolonged chieftaincy dispute.

This dispute stems from a petition submitted on July 24, 2019, which contests Mr. Abrefa Damoah’s appointment as Wenchihene, arguing it violates the Chieftaincy Act, 2009 (Act 759) and constitutional norms.

Although the Bono Regional House of Chiefs initially imposed an injunction barring Mr. Damoah from performing the duties of Wenchihene, this injunction was later overturned by the National House of Chiefs, which ordered a swift resolution of the case.

As the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, under the leadership of Dormahene Nana Agyeman Badu II, has yet to establish a panel for the case, the Sofoase Yefere Royal Family has resorted to legal proceedings.

The High Court in Sunyani has scheduled the next hearing for October 4, 2024. Dr. Obeng Gyan Busia, the Abusuapanin of the Sofoase Yefere Royal Family, is represented in this matter by Lawyer Kwabena Asare Atuah of Asamoah-Cheremeh Chambers.
