Asantehene concludes Bawku mediation

- Otumfuo Osei Tutu II ends months-long mediation in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict
- Mamprusi and Kusasi delegations hold a landmark face-to-face meeting at Manhyia Palace
- The King urges both factions to prepare followers for lasting peace
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has wrapped up his months-long mediation in the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy dispute, calling on all factions to begin preparing their followers for a lasting end to violence and reminding them that they are “one people.”
He made the appeal on Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, where he chaired a landmark face-to-face meeting between representatives of the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities.
In a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Kofi Badu, the Asantehene expressed gratitude to both sides for the maturity and civility they demonstrated throughout the talks, underscoring that peaceful coexistence is inevitable. “He urged the leaders to begin preparing the minds of their supporters to end violence and disorder in their communities permanently,” the release said.
The meeting, held in the Jubilee Hall, brought together a 30-member delegation led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grunah on behalf of the Naayiri, Overlord of Mamprugu, and a team headed by Naba Tambis Baalug of Pusiga for the Bawku Naaba and the Kusasi people. Former MP Cletus Avoka and Dr. Issah served as spokespersons for the Kusasi and Mamprusi sides, respectively.
This concluding session followed several months of separate engagements during which the Asantehene carefully considered submissions from both groups in an effort to help resolve a conflict that has claimed lives and displaced many in the Bawku Traditional Area.
According to the palace, the discussions were cordial, with both sides acknowledging their shared heritage and recognising the futility of the ongoing conflict.
Otumfuo is now expected to prepare a report containing his recommendations for President John Dramani Mahama.
“His Majesty announced that he would submit his report, along with his proposals, to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days,” the statement added, noting that he hopes the President will “act expeditiously” to convene a formal meeting of all parties to present the outcome of the mediation.
