Akwasidae Tuntum Observed at Manhyia

On Sunday, August 17, 2025, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, led the observance of the sixth Akwasidae festival in a solemn ceremony held in honour of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

Known as Akwasidae Tuntum or Kuntunkuni Dae, this special edition of the festival was marked by traditional mourning practices. The Asantehene, along with chiefs, queen mothers, and citizens of the Asante Kingdom, gathered at the Manhyia Palace dressed in black and brown attire — a departure from the usual vibrant clothing and gold regalia that typically define the event.

The subdued celebration reflected the kingdom’s collective grief following the passing of the revered queen mother earlier in the month. Akwasidae, held every 40 days according to the Akan calendar, coincided with this period of mourning.

The one-week observance for Nana Konadu Yiadom III is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025, in line with Akan funeral customs.

The muted tone of the event underscored the significant role the late queen mother played within the traditional leadership structure of the Asante Kingdom.
