Francis Abu resumes gym work after ankle injury

Story Highlights
  • Francis Abu back in the gym as part of his rehabilitation program
  • Suffered ankle injury during Ghana vs Japan at the Kirin Cup
  • Stretchered off and treated at Toyota Memorial Hospital

Black Stars midfielder Francis Abu has taken a positive step in his recovery, resuming gym training this week as part of his rehabilitation program.

The Toulouse FC star sustained a severe ankle injury during Ghana’s friendly against Japan at the Kirin Cup last month at Toyota Stadium. The incident occurred roughly ten minutes into the second half when Abu attempted to block a shot, leading to his substitution by Alidu Seidu.

The 24-year-old was stretchered off as teammates showed visible concern and was rushed to Toyota Memorial Hospital for urgent medical attention. The injury ruled him out of Ghana’s subsequent friendly against South Korea.

After spending a week receiving specialist care in Tokyo, Abu returned to France to continue treatment with Toulouse. Although early assessments suggested he might miss the rest of the season, recent progress indicates he could rejoin competitive action before the campaign ends.

A successful recovery could also boost his chances of earning a place in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup.
