Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo maintains that John Dramani Mahama rightfully won the 2020 general elections, despite the official outcome favoring President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the subsequent Supreme Court ruling.
In an interview Ofosu Ampofo reiterated his unwavering belief in Mahama’s victory, stating, “I am still convinced that President Mahama did not lose the 2020 elections. If everything had been conducted fairly, we would be the governing party.”
While the Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging the election results on March 4, 2021, citing lack of merit, Ofosu Ampofo insists that irregularities led to the victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ampofo highlighted incidents during the electoral process, particularly in Ablekuma Central, where he alleges NDC supporters faced intimidation and violence from state security forces.
He attributed the NDC’s significant vote count to the vigilance of their supporters, who remained steadfast despite adversities.
“In Ablekuma Central, for example, amidst turmoil during the vote declaration, our supporters in Accra stood their ground. Despite sustaining injuries and casualties, they remained resolute. Our victory in Ablekuma Central is a testament to their vigilance,” he recounted.
Ampofo concluded by expressing concern over the impartiality of state security forces, stating, “When state security, meant to be neutral, starts taking sides and brutalizing citizens, it poses a serious challenge to the integrity of the electoral process.”
In essence, Ofosu Ampofo’s stance underscores ongoing disputes surrounding the 2020 election results and the integrity of the electoral process.
