Kumawood actor and media personality Big Akwes is facing backlash over controversial comments he made following the death of Ghanaian highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.
In a recent interview, Big Akwes expressed a sense of “relief” at the musician’s passing, citing the severity of Lumba’s health issues in recent years.
He referenced the singer’s long battle with illness, including complications from spinal surgery and being confined to a wheelchair for nearly three years. According to Big Akwes, the late icon endured persistent pain and even missed a GH¢400,000 performance at a funeral just a month before his death due to his declining health.
Describing the artist’s final days as physically grueling, Big Akwes claimed a recent music video shoot revealed how much Lumba’s condition had worsened.
However, his comments—particularly the suggestion that he felt “happy” about Lumba’s death due to the singer’s suffering—have sparked widespread criticism. Many fans and industry stakeholders have condemned the remarks as ill-timed and insensitive, arguing that such sentiments should be expressed with greater care and respect, especially so soon after the musician’s passing.
Big Akwes, known for his outspoken nature, has often stirred controversy with his public statements, with critics frequently urging him to adopt a more measured tone.
Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, passed away recently after a legendary career spanning more than three decades. Plans are underway for a memorial vigil and other events to honour his musical legacy.
