US student introduces 3D printing technology to Accra school

In a powerful example of cross-continental philanthropy, Ms. Zaina Bint Gibrine, a student at Charlotte Latin School in North Carolina, has spearheaded a transformative technology initiative at Sparkling Stars International School in Accra.

Motivated by a desire to give back to her father’s homeland, Ms. Gibrine travelled from the United States to Ghana to “adopt” the school and integrate advanced manufacturing technology into its academic programme.

At the heart of the project was a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Ms. Gibrine led intensive training sessions for both students and teachers, simplifying the principles of 3D printing and turning theoretical interest into practical experience. To ensure the programme’s sustainability, she donated two fully equipped 3D printers, complete with accessories and filament supplies.

The initiative was the result of a well-organised fundraising campaign coordinated by Ms. Gibrine, which drew support from donors in both Ghana and the United States. The funds raised covered the purchase of high-quality equipment, essential technical materials, and the travel and logistics required to implement the project on-site.

During the official handover, a school representative praised the effort, noting that the donation has equipped students and teachers with future-ready skills and tools.

Management of Sparkling Stars International School expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, describing it as more than a technology donation, but a meaningful bridge between Charlotte and Accra. The school also expressed hope for continued collaboration and a return visit to further build students’ technical capacity.

As 3D printing increasingly shapes global industries, students at Sparkling Stars are now better positioned to participate in the digital economy, thanks to the vision of a young changemaker and her enduring connection to Ghana.
