The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a new update on the victims of last Wednesday’s stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, reporting notable improvements among those who were critically injured.
The incident, which occurred during a military recruitment exercise, has claimed six lives so far.
Sharing the latest information, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director-General of the GAF’s Department of Public Relations, stated that three of the five individuals initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are now stable and have been transferred to a different ward.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, November 17, Captain Arhin noted that 29 victims were brought to the hospital on the day of the incident. Medical teams have been working tirelessly to stabilise them and prevent any further fatalities.
“The injured are responding well. They are receiving the highest level of care at the hospital. On the day of the incident, five people were admitted to the ICU. Currently, three of them have improved and have been moved to another ward,” she said.
She added that although some victims have been treated and discharged, 16 remain hospitalised and are under close observation.
“On the day of the incident, 29 people were brought in. We now have about 16 still on admission. The rest have been treated, discharged, and are continuing their recovery at home. We are doing everything possible to prevent any additional loss of life,” she explained.
Captain Arhin also confirmed that the 37 Military Hospital, with government support, is covering all medical expenses for victims of the stampede.
“Anyone who comes to the 37 Hospital with injuries related to the stampede will have their full medical bill taken care of by the hospital—and by extension, the government,” she assured.
The stampede occurred on Wednesday, November 12, when thousands of young Ghanaians rushed into the El-Wak Sports Stadium in an attempt to participate in a military recruitment exercise.
