UG Confirms No Increase in Academic Fees for 2025/2026

Story Highlights
  • UG confirms academic fees remain unchanged since 2023/2024
  • Non-academic fee adjustments followed SRC and GRASAG recommendations
  • Scholarships available through the Student Financial Aid Office

The University of Ghana (UG) has announced that Academic Facility User Fees (AFUF) for the 2025/2026 academic year have not been increased.

In a statement released on January 15, 2026, the University explained that all academic fees remain the same as those charged since the 2023/2024 academic year. This clarification comes amid public discussions and concerns about UG’s fee structure.

UG further stated that statutory fees are imposed in accordance with the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080), which requires parliamentary approval prior to implementation.

According to management, recent revisions to certain non-academic charges were made following proposals from the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG). These decisions, reached during a consultative meeting held on January 8, 2026, include:

  • Fixing the SRC Development Levy at GH¢200 to fund student-centered projects.
  • Making the Telecel Data Package optional, giving students the choice to opt out.
  • Clarifying that the 75th Anniversary Levy is not a new charge but a continuation of contributions toward the multipurpose Student Experience Centre, which began in 2023.

To lessen the financial pressure on students and their families, the University has retained its reduced initial payment policy, requiring students to pay only 50 percent of approved fees for registration, compared to the previous 70 percent.

UG reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, regulatory compliance, and continuous engagement with student leadership. The University also highlighted the availability of scholarships and financial support through the Student Financial Aid Office for eligible students.

Finally, UG pledged to uphold academic excellence, protect student welfare, and maintain constructive collaboration with government agencies and student representatives on all fee-related issues.
