The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially restored all services to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), following recent tensions over the Vice-Chancellor’s retirement status.

This comes just days after a standoff between GTEC and Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor of UCC, regarding the enforcement of his compulsory retirement age. The dispute led GTEC to initiate punitive measures on September 19, 2025, including a complete withdrawal of services to the university.

The initial suspension included the halt of services such as:

  • Accreditation processing
  • Government salary subventions
  • GETFund support
  • Book and research allowances
  • Post-retirement contracts
  • Recruitment financial clearance
  • Other related institutional requests

However, in a letter dated September 24, 2025, signed by Jerry Sarfo, Acting Director of Corporate Affairs at GTEC, the Commission confirmed the resumption of services, citing UCC’s compliance with its directive and the Vice-Chancellor’s decision to challenge the matter in court.

“Following evidence provided by the Registrar of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) indicating compliance with our directive, and the legal steps taken by Prof. Johnson Boampong, GTEC has decided to restore all previously withdrawn services to UCC with immediate effect,” the statement said.

The letter, addressed to the Registrar of UCC, also confirmed that the university has been reinstated as a fully accredited institution on the GTEC website.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the Registrar and the university’s management during this period,” the statement concluded.
