Two men are missing after a canoe carrying six people capsized on the Offin River near Achiase in the Atwima Mponua District.
According to Daniel Adu, a Unit Committee member, the incident happened around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 25, when the canoe’s inexperienced paddler lost control, causing all six passengers to fall into the river.
“Four of them were rescued, but the two others — both adult men — are still unaccounted for,” Adu told Asaase News.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) responded to the scene but suspended search efforts until Friday, September 26. In addition, traditional leaders performed rituals at the riverbank in hopes of aiding the search, although no new developments have been reported.
Adu also recalled a similar tragedy on the same river stretch in 2021, when four people drowned — only three bodies were recovered; the fourth was never found.
