TEWU Suspends Nationwide Strike

- TEWU suspended its indefinite strike which began on September 19, 2025
- The strike aimed to push for new Conditions of Service for non-teaching staff
- All members are to return to work by October 2, or by October 6 if they traveled
The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has announced a suspension of its indefinite strike, which began on September 19, 2025, in demand for the signing of new Conditions of Service.
The decision was disclosed at a press briefing on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, with the union urging all affected members to resume work by Thursday, October 2, while those who traveled outside their regions should return by Monday, October 6.
TEWU represents non-teaching staff within the Ghana Education Service, public and technical universities, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority.
General Secretary King James Azortibah stated that the suspension follows constructive negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and other employer institutions. A follow-up meeting has been scheduled with FWSC on October 7, 2025 to finalize the agreements.
“This is a suspension, not a termination of the strike,” Mr. Azortibah emphasized. “We will not hesitate to resume the action if commitments are not fulfilled.”
He also warned against any victimization of TEWU members, stressing that the union will stand by its members in cases of unfair labour practices.
The leadership thanked union members, school administrators, and the media for their solidarity during the nine-day strike, describing it as a powerful demonstration of unity and purpose.
