The seven Supreme Court nominees appointed by President John Mahama are set to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting from Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
This follows a referral by Speaker Alban Bagbin to the Committee, in accordance with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. The referral was made during parliamentary proceedings on May 27.
Speaker Bagbin also directed the leadership of both the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to support the vetting process.
The hearings will evaluate the nominees’ legal qualifications, professional experience, and judicial philosophies to determine their fitness for the Supreme Court bench.
The nominees, whose appointments were announced by the President on April 29, 2025, include:
- Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
- Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
- Justice Senyo Dzamefe
- Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
- Justice Philip Bright Mensah
- Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
- Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
The nominations have sparked criticism, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) accusing the President of using the appointments to pursue a “third-term political agenda.”
Nevertheless, the vetting is expected to go ahead as planned, and the Committee is anticipated to present its findings before Parliament adjourns for recess.
