The Paramount Chief of Sankore in the Ahafo Region, Nana Ogyedom Appiah Kubi Pabo Katakye IV, has urged traditional leaders and security agencies to collaborate with the government in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) to safeguard farmlands.

Speaking at Sankore during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in the Ahafo Region—held under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure The Future”—the chief expressed deep concern about the rapid destruction of farmlands by illegal mining activities. He stressed that chiefs, as custodians of the land, together with security agencies, must play an active role in supporting interventions being implemented by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

“The measures introduced by the government to tackle illegal mining are well-placed, but they will yield even better results if chiefs and the security services fully participate,” he stated.

The Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, also appealed to residents to back government policies aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector. She highlighted the need to embrace locally grown foods to stimulate the economy, enhance public health, and create employment opportunities.
