Rehoboth Properties Denies Allegations of Power Theft

Rehoboth Properties Limited has strongly denied recent media claims of illegal electricity connections at its social housing development in Kweiman, Accra, calling the reports inaccurate and harmful to its reputation.

In a statement, the company described the allegations—suggesting widespread power theft involving hundreds of homes—as misleading and lacking context, particularly regarding the actual state of the properties involved.

Rehoboth clarified that it does not oversee electrical installations for homes under construction. These tasks, it said, are handled by either third-party contractors or the homeowners themselves. The company also distanced itself from a block factory mentioned in some reports, noting it is operated by an independent business that applied for power separately and has no affiliation with Rehoboth.

Of the 400 units cited in the reports, the company noted that about 150 are still under construction and not connected to any power source. Many other homes, although completed, remain unoccupied—especially those purchased by buyers living abroad—making the scale of the alleged illegal activity “statistically improbable.”

Rehoboth further explained that it applied and paid for electricity meters as far back as 2023, but due to nationwide supply shortages, only some meters have been installed. A formal complaint was lodged with both the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ministry of Energy in April 2023, but no resolution has been reached.

“All meter installations and connections were carried out by ECG staff,” the company stressed, emphasizing that it lacks both the authority and technical capacity to interfere in power installations.

The company added that ECG has been issuing estimated bills to some residents while meter installations are still pending—an approach Rehoboth said is commonly practiced given the ongoing challenges.

Electricity supply to the estate has since been restored, and Rehoboth says it is cooperating fully with ECG to resolve outstanding issues.

The company called on media outlets to verify information before publishing and warned it may pursue legal action if false or defamatory stories continue.

Rehoboth Properties is one of several developers offering affordable housing solutions in Greater Accra for both local residents and the Ghanaian diaspora.
