Railway Workers Threaten Nationwide Strike

- Railway workers unpaid for almost a year
- Union threatens strike and protest by September 30
- Workers accuse GRCL and Transport Ministry of neglect
The Ministry of Transport has committed to addressing the concerns of railway workers who have not been paid for nearly a year.
The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) recently threatened to halt all railway operations nationwide and stage a mass protest on September 30, 2025, if the government fails to settle their outstanding salaries.
In a formal notice to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the Union cited severe financial hardship caused by the prolonged salary delays. Workers also accused both the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) of failing to respond to repeated appeals for dialogue—despite efforts from the National Labour Commission, Parliament’s Transport Committee, and the Ministry of Labour.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 17, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe assured that the issue is being taken seriously and concrete steps are underway to resolve it.
“The railway sector has long been neglected, but President Mahama is committed to its revival. We are actively engaging with the Ministry of Finance to find a sustainable solution,” he said.
Minister Nikpe emphasized that the welfare of workers is a key priority: “We empathize with them, and we are close to resolving the salary issue.”
He also announced a new campaign—launched in collaboration with security agencies and the Lands Commission—to remove encroachers from railway lands and secure land titles. The initiative is expected to support contractors in advancing ongoing railway infrastructure projects.
