The Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology has signaled its intention to take firm action against mining companies that flout Ghana’s environmental laws.

According to the Committee, any mining firm that fails to comply with regulations meant to protect the environment and safeguard host communities will face sanctions. During a working visit to the Newmont Ahafo South Mines in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region, the Committee’s Vice Chairperson, John Darko, told Adom News that nationwide inspections will be carried out to evaluate mining companies’ compliance with environmental standards.

He explained that the exercise is meant to ensure mining operations do not pose risks to human lives, farmlands, or water bodies, stressing that companies found in breach of the law will be dealt with appropriately.

Following a tour of the Newmont Ahafo South Mines, Mr Darko expressed satisfaction with the company’s environmental management efforts, particularly its land reclamation initiatives and restoration of mined-out areas.

Representing the company, Process Manager Samuel Bonney Noi described the Committee’s visit as both timely and reassuring, noting that it provided an opportunity to address concerns and dispel what he described as unfounded claims about the company’s commitment to environmental protection.
