- Equipment supports irrigation for key crops like tomatoes and cabbage
- Minister urges proper use to boost productivity and food security
In a move to enhance agricultural productivity and food security in the Oti Region, Regional Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong has distributed 100 water pumping machines to farmers across all nine districts and municipalities.
The initiative aims to provide critical irrigation support, enabling farmers to expand crop cultivation and improve yields. Key crops targeted include tomatoes, okra, cabbage, and carrots—all essential to strengthening Ghana’s food supply chain.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister Gyapong underscored the need for responsible use and maintenance of the equipment. He called on farmers, cooperatives, and local leaders to ensure the machines are used effectively to maximize agricultural output and long-term impact.
“The government remains committed to supporting our farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture. I personally understand the challenges farmers face, and I want to see them thrive,” he said.
Prosper Addo, Municipal Chief Executive for Krachi West, praised the initiative and commended both the Minister for Food and Agriculture and the Oti Regional Minister for their leadership. He assured that Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) will closely monitor the machines’ usage by farmer cooperatives to ensure accountability.
Addo also highlighted the strategic role of the Oti River as a key water source that, when paired with proper irrigation tools, can significantly boost agricultural production and improve national food security.
This intervention forms part of the government’s broader commitment to empowering farmers and advancing sustainable farming practices throughout the region.
