NMC rules against ModernGhana.com and Class FM

- NMC rules ModernGhana.com and Class FM published unverified, misleading stories about Adamus Resources CEO
- Both outlets admitted lapses and removed the contested content after intervention
- Media outlets must retract all unverified publications and issue formal apologies within seven days
The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a ruling on a complaint filed by Adamus Resources Limited and its CEO, Ms. Angela List, against online portal ModernGhana.com and Accra-based Class FM over publications the complainants described as misleading and damaging.
Settlement Meeting
On September 3, 2025, the NMC’s Complaints Settlement Committee facilitated a constructive and cordial meeting between the parties.
During the session, both ModernGhana.com and Class FM admitted they had failed to verify or cross-check information about Ms. List before publication. ModernGhana noted that some content was sourced from the Ghana News Agency, while Class FM offered no explanation for the lapse. Both outlets confirmed that the contested stories were removed following intervention by the complainants’ representatives.
Commission Findings
After reviewing the case, the NMC concluded that both media outlets breached Articles 4 and 5 of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Code of Ethics, which require journalists to verify information prior to publication.
The Commission also noted that although Adamus Resources had prepared a rejoinder, it was not served directly on the respondents, and therefore the outlets were not legally obliged to publish it.
Ruling
The NMC directed ModernGhana.com and Class FM to:
- Retract all unverified publications about the complainants.
- Issue formal apologies to Adamus Resources and Ms. List.
- Ensure that retractions and apologies receive the same prominence as the original stories.
- Complete all retractions and apologies within seven days.
The Commission encouraged all parties to maintain the cordiality achieved during the settlement meeting and stressed the importance of ethical journalism and respectful corporate-media relations in Ghana.
