Nigerian Royals Join Oguaa Fetu Festival

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has warmly received His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri Kingdom, and Her Majesty, Olori Atuwatse III, as they joined the people of Cape Coast to celebrate the renowned Oguaa Fetu Festival.

The Nigerian royal visit is viewed as a significant gesture to deepen cultural relations between Ghana and Nigeria and to showcase the rich, shared heritage of both nations.

At the official welcome ceremony, GTA Chief Executive Officer Maame Efua Houadjeto highlighted the importance of the occasion:

“This visit is more than a formality—it’s a powerful symbol of cultural unity between Ghana and Nigeria. The Oguaa Fetu Festival is one of our most treasured traditions, and hosting Their Majesties is an honor for all of us.”

She also reaffirmed the GTA’s support for the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, in ensuring the festival’s continued success.

“The Ghana Tourism Authority remains committed to supporting the hosting of dignitaries and preserving the cultural essence of the festival for future generations,” she said.

Held annually on the first Saturday in September, the Oguaa Fetu Festival—also known as Fetu Afahye—commemorates the end of a historic plague in Cape Coast. Today, it stands as a vibrant celebration of ancestry, community, and cultural identity, while also boosting tourism and local commerce.

This year, the presence of the Olu and Olori of Warri added a unique and memorable touch to the festivities, reinforcing the unifying power of cultural exchange.
