Newmont Denies Responsibility for Tano River Pollution

Newmont has rejected claims linking its operations to recent reports of pollution in the Tano River within the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region, where the company runs the Ahafo North mine.

In a statement, Newmont said the reports had “wrongly and unfortunately” associated the river’s pollution with its mining activities.

In response to the allegations, the company said it has been working closely with relevant stakeholders to carry out field inspections and thorough investigations into its operations and environmental management systems. These processes have so far involved interviews, on-site assessments, and reviews of internal records.

One of the investigations was jointly led by the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), while another assessment included youth leaders and Assembly members from communities hosting the mine.

According to the company, the youth leaders and Assembly members later published their findings, stating that they found no evidence connecting Newmont’s operations to pollution of the Tano River.

Newmont emphasized that its activities comply with strict environmental and water management standards, often going beyond regulatory requirements.

Reaffirming its commitment to responsible mining, the company said it will continue to cooperate with all investigative bodies examining the issue.

“Newmont states categorically that its operations do not pollute the Tano River,” the release said.

The company added that it remains committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable development in the Tano North Municipality.
